To the left in the above picture is 'The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge' taken from the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. One hundred and fifty feet below, the 'Niagara River' rages into some of the mightiest rapids you'll ever see.
The first bridge over the river opened in 1848. Originally a suspension bridge for horse-carriages and pedestrians, it was located where the 'Whirlpool Rapids Bridge' is today.
In 1853 rail traffic reached Niagara Falls and traversed the 'Suspension Bridge'. Work began immediately to rebuild the bridge. It became a double-deck span, with rail traffic using the upper level, while the lower deck was for horse-carriages and pedestrians. The new bridge was opened in 1855 and to this day functions as both a bridge for vehicular and rail traffic. And the occassional horse.
The now abandoned "Michigan Central Railway' bridge is shown on the right. The Canadian Pacific Railway owns this abandoned structure which was built in 1925. The bridge no longer carries rail traffic.
In the far distance you can see the 'elevated' Robert Moses Parkway located in New York State, U.S.A
