Hello

Hello and Welcome

My name is Dave.

I enjoy walking and I enjoy taking pictures.

Although this is Niagara Falls, you'll see very few waterfall images.

You'll see what tourists don't see, in what is sometimes referred to as 'The World's Most Famous Address' or 'The Honeymoon Capital Of The World' or 'The Cataract City'.

New photos are posted throughout the photoblog so be sure to click 'older posts' at the bottom of each page. (photographs enlarge nicely with just a click)

You'll see our shopping centers, our neighbourhoods, our favourite taverns, night clubs and restaurants. I'll throw in some history along the way.

Green Space

The winter of 2009/10 was a relatively mild one here in Niagara.
As of this mid-March posting,
the little snow we had melts away. This view looks east along the 'Haulage Road.

Read the history of the 'haulage rd' and this dedicated 'green space'
in this series of photos.

Business

I walked home from work today, snapping photos along the way.

This busy 'one-track' mainline, cuts across every major thoroughfare in the city. Your view looks north from Thorold Stone Road. It would be my guess there is traffic backed-up there as you read this.

Business

Too bad you don't have one of these in your town.

People

I nodded, smiled and said 'hello' to this gentle couple as I strolled past them today.

I'd walked about a block when I suddenly though "wouldn't that be a nice picture."

And so, back I went and asked if I might take their photo. They were most gracious, and here is the result.

Business

So many industries have fallen by the wayside or simply moved away in the last several years in Niagara Falls, Canada.

This company has just recently announced its closure.

Signage

This sign gives fair warning of the dangers that await you in this hydro canal.

Canada Day 2009 Niagara Falls, Canada

This post is being entered to 'niagarafallsphotoblog' on Wednesday July 1st, 2009.

Today is 'CANADA DAY'!

This national holiday falls on whatever day July 1st might be.
This year it falls on a Wednesday.

That's right! The entire country shuts down in the middle of the week.

It's Canadian 'eh'.

The parade will be along soon, but here's a look at Morrison Street as crowds gather for the parade.

I love a parade.

the tramping of feet,
I love every beat I hear of a drum.
I love a parade, when I hear a band
I just want to stand and cheer as they come.
That rat-a tat-tat, the blare of a horn.
That rat-a tat-tat, a bright uniform;
The sight of a drill will give me a thrill,
I thrill at the skill of everything military.
I love a parade, a handful of vets,
A line of cadets or any brigade,
For I love a parade

As the 2009 'Canada Day' parade makes its way along Morrison Street, we see coming in to view, the 'Memorial Militaires Alumni Marching Band - Niagara Region'.

This band was well received by the throngs.

And I love the little guy holding the middle of the banner.

Hailing from Burlington, Ontario
the 'Top Hat Marching Orchestra' is always a crowd-pleaser.

Another, in a series of fine marching bands to visit this years 'Canada Day' parade.

The 'Niagara Falls Concert Band' performed the duties as dignitaries arrived, and entertained the crowds throughout the day.

As an added note: some pictures were taken in the early morning, accounting for so few celebrants in photos.

The crowds were heavy throughout the day and the weather was cool but dry.

Members representing 'The Canadian Armed Forces' are celebrated during the 'Canada Day' parade.

Here you see them arrive at their destination with Niagara Falls Mayor, Ted Salci.

Cake anyone?

Standing atop a rickety chair, I could barely fit this 'Canada Day' cake in to the picture.

But from the crowds outside, it ain't gonna be enough.

The cakes in the background won't be enough either.

In every town holding 'Canada Day' festivities today there will be a 'car show'.

The 'Optimist Park' location in Niagara Falls was no exception.

Mercury/Monarch fans enjoyed the finer points of this '57 beauty.

Yellow seems to be a popular colour
for hot rods, as you'll see in the next picture.

The Falls

The view in the picture above is from the foot of 'Clifton Hill'.
In the distance, the Canadian 'Horseshoe Falls' and to the left, the 'American Falls'.

Directly across the intersection, the entrance to the world famous 'Maid Of The Mist' boat ride.

The Falls

The structure to the right is 'Table Rock House'.

It stands at the brink and serves as an information centre, as well as the entrance to 'Journey Behind The Falls'. It is also a fine-dining restaurant (Elements), as well as a shopping concourse. Click on picture for a close-up of the teeny- tiny people you see in the distance.
